Happy February ya’ll! I am so excited that we are slowly moving out of winter. It was still light out when I got home from work today! So, in all of my cheeriness, I thought it would be a great time to recap what I’ve been up to in January and to toss in some of the things I’ve been loving.
January I’ve been….
Drinking: Some sleepy time tea! I have been sleeping horribly lately and am doing everything I can to to get to sleep and stay asleep. I even gave up my bedtime Snapchat (BeingLeanna) watching because i’m sure it keeps me awake at night.
Cooking/Baking: Nothing. I am fully reverting back to childhood and relishing in what are hopefully my last few months living with my mom and enjoying all of her cooking. I did make my mom chocolate cupcakes with vanilla frosting for her birthday though! Oh, and I did help my stepmom make a cauliflower crust pizza tonight :-]
Wearing: My warmest winter apparel. We have had a wacky winter up here in the Northeast. Weeks where it’s warm followed by weeks where it’s frigid. My winter boots from Bass have been my go to in January. Plus, I fit right in at this ice bar in my toastiest clothes.
Feeling: Ready for February! I’ll be seriously looking for a house for myself and i’ll be going to Philadelphia for a long weekend at the end of the month! Let me know if you have any suggestions for things to do in Philly!
Buying: Not a lot! I’ll have a full update soon on my spending ban. I’ll list out everything I spent money on and how I saved my cash this month. I spent more than i’d like to have but, I just couldn’t pass up the white sale at Target, so sue me :-]
Listening To: I’ve been listening to a lot of Podcasts lately. The Young House Love podcast is probably my favorite right now. Plus, I downloaded this app Pzizz that’s supposed to help you sleep. I’ve been using it for a week or so after hearing the girls from Of A Kind mention it on their podcast.
Watching: I finally started watching Pretty Little Liars. I know i’m about a decade behind but I figured it’s still relevant enough to start up. It’s my treadmill show. I’ve told myself I can only watch it if i’m walking on the treadmill so we’ll see how long it takes me to get through the first season haha. Also, i’ve started watching This Is Us. I’m a few episodes in and and I now get what all the hype is about. So good.
Pinning: Anything and everything home related. I’ve been cleaning out my Pinterest page lately and making room for things that fit my style now. Leave your Pinterest page in the comments so I can follow you!
Thankful For: Everything. The fact that i’m financially ready to buy a home most especially.
If you’re wondering, these pictures are all from my Instagram lately, if you’re not following along, you’re missing out! @BeingLeanna
I am so excited for today’s post. One of my favorite bloggers, Christine from Simply Stine wrote this Bloggers Tell All tag post on Friday and I just knew I had to participate. I am all about “get to know me” type of posts and I especially love posts with blogging tips. So, why not combine the two like Christine did? Perfect. Please go check out her post (if you haven’t read it already) and let me know your answers in the comments below, or write your own post and tweet me!
Bloggers Tell All Tag:
// What was your first post about?
My first post was a very poorly written introduction with no pictures. I repeat, no pictures. Deep sigh. Feel free to read it here as I would never take down any of my posts, no matter how embarrassing haha.
My first “real” post was the one following my introduction and it was a Thanksgiving ootd. I still love this outfit (rip jeweled sweater) but the pictures are again, awful.
// What is the meaning behind my blog name?
I went pretty simple. My name is Leanna and I’d like to think that my blog is all about Being Leanna. Clever, right? Honestly, coming up with a name was super difficult for me. I decided to start a blog ( I had had other journal type blogs wayyyy back in the day that will remain hopefully hidden from the world) months before I actually did because I could not come up with a name I liked. I wanted my name to be able to carry across all social medias so I wanted something short that could be the same on every platform. Finally, Being Leanna was born.
// Who/What inspires your work?
All of my readers, fellow bloggers, makeup/skincare trends, travel sites. Literally everything and anything can inspire me. I always have a running list on my phone of things or products to check out, blog post ideas, etc. Also, i’m a huge fan of Buzzfeed so, they definitely help me figure out what’s trendy.
// Proudest Blogging Accomplishment:
Having people comment or email me and tell me that my travel posts have inspired them in some way. Whether that was to help them plan an upcoming trip or to help them to decide to travel. It really warms my heart when you guys get something out of what i’ve written. Especially when those posts mean so much to me. #travelbloggergoals
Boy do I ever. I am a very organized person. I have lists upon lists of things going at all times. One organization tip that really helps me is my current two notebook situation. I have one notebook for all things travel. My current inspirations, details from all of my travels, and ideas for future travel posts. My second notebook is for everything else. Blog post ideas, outlines for those ideas, notes from previous webinars i’ve attended and a list of linkups I like.
// Explain how you prepare for a blog post:
I’ve got a different process for different types of posts. If it’s a travel post i’m putting together I like to do all of my research first. Gather some fun facts, make sure i’m spelling things right and verifying the names of places i’m suggesting. Then, I like to have a handwritten outline for how the post is going to be laid out. From there i’ll go through my photos and pick out the ones that fit the outline best and i’ll get them edited and ready for the post. Then, I write!
If it’s for a makeup or any type of product post I’ll take pictures immediately upon receiving the product. Next i’ll test the product for at least 3 weeks before I write a review so I know i’ve tested thoroughly. I’ll outline how i’d like the post to go. Is it a review, a comparison, a whole brand spotlight? From there I’ll write and then edit the pictures I like best.
// Favorite/least favorite part of blogging”
My favorite thing about blogging are the connections i’ve made with other bloggers. I feel like i’ve got friends all over the place and that’s a fantastic feeling. I love having a creative outlet that connects me with other people.
My last favorite thing is that it does take over your life if you let it. I definitely am guilty of staging photos for the blog or Instagram. I have yet to do something just because it’ll make for a great blog post but, I sense it’s coming.
// What camera do you use/other equipment:
I use my trusty smart phone, a Galaxy S5 to be exact. I’m still not to the point where I want to spend the money on a DSLR but i’m getting there. It would be great to learn how to use them but I just don’t have the time or $ right now.
I have some lenses that I bought off of amazon and they work pretty well for being clip-ons for a phone camera; I highly suggest trying them out.
I also have a mini tripod for my phone with a remote so that I can take some pictures of myself. Hopefully i’ll get back into fashion pictures soon.
// Biggest mistake you’ve made blogging:
Not keeping up with social media. Every blogger wants to grow and reach more people but up until recently I didn’t out in nearly as much time as I should have in advertising my blog. I find it hard to advertise myself and lure people to check out my amazing blog. Unfortunately for me, organic growth doesn’t really happen anymore.
// How has your blog changed?
Being Leanna has changed a lot since its birth in 2014. I always wanted to be a beauty blogger, and still love posting about beauty and products but I find i’m slowly switching over to more travel. I don’t want to limit myself by blogging about just one topic but I’ve definitely narrowed down my scope of topics since beginning and it’s so much more fulfilling.
// Have you attended any blog conferences?
Nope, but i’d love to! If I can’t make it to a blog conference in 2017 I’d at least like to meet a blogger friend in person somewhere. They aren’t the same, but they’re similar.
// Best tip for anyone thinking of starting a blog:
I’m going to go ahead and steal Christine’s answer because it is such amazing advice. Do not start a blog for the free products, the money, or the notoriety. You have to start a blog because you want to write, you want to share your knowledge with other people and you want to work really hard. Sure, free products are awesome, but that can’t be your goal. I blog because I love to share my knowledge with people and I want to make friends.
Blogging is a lot of hard, time consuming work so if you’re looking to start a blog, be prepared! Trust me, the fun is more than worth all the time and effort.
Let me know your bloggers tell all answers in the comments, or write your own post! Above is the list of all the bloggers tell all prompts! Be sure to check out Christine’s post and let her know how awesome this tag is!
I’m going to sound like every other blogger on the internet right now, but I love fall. Love it. The turning leaves, the bonfires, the cozy nights in. And, especially up here in NY, fall marks the start of apple season. Apple picking and apple cider donut eating are two of my favorite activities in the fall. You heard me right, i’m not all about that pumpkin spice. Sure, it smells great, and I used to love the famed PSL but it’s too sweet for me now. Apple anything and i’m on board.
Which brings me to the whole point of this post, I participated in a Fall Blog Swap!
I participated in the Fall Blog Swap hosted by the ladies of Show Your Blog love and got paired up with the lovely Meghan Anna and had such a great time getting to know her. My favorite part of participating in these swaps is getting to know bloggers I hadn’t known before. I didn’t follow Meghan’s blog or her social media, but now I do both!
She hit the nail on the head with all of the sweet gifts she sent.
First up, an amazing smelling apple scented candle. Apple anything makes me oh, so happy. Especially candles. Who doesn’t love a good candle?
For my love of coffee, Meghan grabbed an adorable mug that I’ve been using almost every day. The saying is on both sides which is especially great for us lefties out there who always end up with the design facing the wrong way when we take a sip.
I can’t recall if I mentioned this to her or not to her but, i’m a huge list maker. They make me feel so organized and happy and some of my favorite pens to use are these Sharpie pens. They don’t bleed and they really stand out. So great.
But, the best part? Meghan sent me a book! I know it’s been a while since I wrote a book review but I’ve been reading a lot lately and i’m super excited to read this one. It’s The Secrets She Kept by Brenda Novak and it’s a mystery/thriller kind of novel. Check out the synopsis here or wait around and i’ll try to do a book review!
If you’ve never participated in a blog swap before you really need to! They are so much fun and you get to make friends all over the place! Meghan is from the Mid-Western US and i’m so happy to say I’ve got a friend there now!
Question of the day: What are your favorite things about the season change?
Where “go for it” all began. Neither of us ever thought it would evolve from a joke to real life advice but it has.
Happy Monday Ya’ll!
I hope everybody had a better weekend than me. I spent most of it in bed or on the couch with a cold so i’m especially in need of some Monday motivation this week. I present to you, my life motto:
Go for it!
Everybody needs a life motto and everybody needs a little humor so I combined the two and have been using this as my motto/motivation for any situation for 9 years now.
I jokingly started saying go for it my freshman year of college (my first college roommate and I pictured above, weren’t we the attractive pair?) whenever my roommate would ask me virtually anything. I still say it all the time but nowadays I take it a bit more seriously. Except when that roommate calls or texts me with questions. Then, go for it is always the answer.
Had I not just gone for it, I would have spent a whole day alone in London instead of with this beautiful lady!
To me, Go For It! simply means to not overthink something and just do it. I’m a person who likes to plan everything down to the very last detail and reminding myself to go for it gets me to be a bit more spontaneous. Go for it is there to provide the motivation to do things that make me a bit uncomfortable and to get me out of my box of regularity.
How to use “go for it”:
// If you’ve been contemplating something for a while, just stop thinking and GO FOR IT! Ex) Last year when I spontaneously moved to South Carolina because I had been dying to move south for years.
I would have never, ever tried snails had it not been for my “go for it” attitude when in France
// If you’re at a restaurant and don’t know what to order or always get the same thing just GO FOR IT and pick something new or different. Ex) I was super unsure about eating escargot but, I ordered it anyways and it was delicious!
// If you’re stuck when debating a few different options just GO FOR IT! If you’re still debating you like all your options well enough. Just chose one! You’re going to like whatever option you get. Ex) When booking a hotel in San Antonio this past week I was debating a room with a view much closer to the river walk or a cheaper hotel. I decided I had the extra $ and booked the hotel with the better proximity and the view. I’m already over the moon with my choice.
I would have never gone to Venice, Italy and met all of these amazing girls had I held myself back when I was nervous about traveling alone.
Rules for using “go for it”:
The first rule of “go for it”, is that you don’t talk about “go for it”. Just kidding. The first rule is understanding it’s not meant to encourage stupid or dangerous behavior. I may jokingly say “go for it” at dumb things but my friends and I all know better.
The second rule is that you must say it with earnest every time. Say it loud and say it proud, otherwise it’s not as fun.
In all seriousness though, don’t ever let your worries hold you back. Worrying can prevent you from doing amazing things. I’m the first one to admit that it’s easier to sit home than to go out and do things that are hard or uncomfortable but if I always chose the easy route i’d never have made a lot of the friends I did. I never would have experienced so many new foods, and i’d especially never be able to say that I had gone to Europe twice!
Now get out there and GO FOR IT!
Question of the day: What’s your Monday Motivation?
Now, let me just start off by saying I don’t like to make public comments like this but today, I just couldn’t help myself. If you haven’t heard about the assault on police officers in Dallas last night, just turn on any news station today.
Dallas was holding a peaceful protest in solidarity with the two black men that were killed earlier in the week by police officers. The event was going well, everything was calm until snipers started shooting. 5 police officers were killed. Countless others are in the hospital with injuries unknown (as of the time I’m writing this anyways).
I normally keep quiet when it comes to things like this. I don’t want any lashing out or drama in the comments but today, I welcome it. Please, tell me what you think. I heard a comment this morning that horrified me. They didn’t come out and say that these officers had it coming but, they generalized that all officers are the same. That police as a whole need to stop killing black people.
While I agree that the atrocities have to end, I would never, ever assume that all police officers feel the same way or are even remotely similar. It’s unfair to punish those that have done no wrong. These Dallas officers are not the same as those that have killed people in Minnesota and Louisiana this past week. Maybe I like to see the good in people. Maybe I just have an extremely hard time wrapping my head around the idea that people are still racist. I’m pretty sure not every cop wants to kill black people. Or, even kill people at all for that matter. It was hard for me to hear that someone would assume that all police officers have it coming to them if they don’t stop killing people.
Maybe it’s because i’m white. Maybe it’s because I have a hard time imagining that cops are there for anything but our protection. I feel for these officers and their families. Yes, there are always a few bad people in the bunch and those are the ones that have been plastered all over the news lately. Despite that I still believe that the majority are there to do good and want to protect us. Us meaning people of all colors, races and religions.
Okay, I’ve been rambling on long enough. I’m not sure what else to say or if any of that was even English but those are my thoughts. Please share yours below!
