February Birchbox! 5

Hello Readers!

It’s that time of the month again where I review what I got in my Birchbox! If you’re unfamiliar with the service Birchbox is a $10 monthly subscription box where you receive 5 sample sized items to try out. When you sign up you take a survey to tell them all about your skin type, your skin concerns, hair type, etc. With all of that information you get 5 items tailored to you to try out each month! This is my third month so far (I also got a bonus box the first month I signed up) and I have learned about so many great products. Here’s this month’s 5!

February Birchbox

Benefit Cosmetics- Roller Lash

You guys have no idea how excited I was to receive this in my box this month. Or maybe you do? I talk about Benefit an awful lot. Either way, I was head-over-heels to be able to try this before it came out. And yes, I pre-ordered the full size that will supposedly ship today!! If you want to read all about this new mascara from Benefit click here. I did a side by side comparison between the Roller Lash mascara and the They’re Real!

Caudalie- Vinosource Moisturizing Sortbet

I have always wanted to try Caudalie products but just never got around to buying them. I was thrilled with this moisturizer and I loved the scent. I normally have an issue with scented products on my face but this one claimed to be for sensitive skin and I haven’t had any issues. I was skeptical that this would not reduce redness, but I definitely noticed a difference around my nose and forehead after about a weeks worth of use. I haven’t tried a product with grapes as an ingredient and I was surprised with how moisturizing this was. Perfect for day ot night wear. Overall i’m very pleased with this but I do prefer a moisturizer with a sunscreen, especially going into the summer so I probably will not purchase this particular product for daytime.

CLEAN- Skin Eau de Parfum

I think I need to change up my profile on Birchbox’s website. I have gotten a perfume sample with every box. And I do love perfume, but I think i’m gonna need to stop. I want to buy ALL OF THEM. It’s a problem. I am the worst at describing scents, and if you’ve read any of my other Birchbox reviews then you’ll agree. According to Birchbox “This light eau de parfum from CLEAN is inspired by the subtle fragrance of bare skin: It’s a scent that’s fresh, alluring, and utterly not overdone (or should we say not overdressed?).” They say it better than I could. I would describe this as how your skin smells after a bubble bath. Either way, I love it. It’s now also on my list of perfumes to buy.

PARLOR- Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray

This stuff I was super excited about. I have always wanted to master the beachy waves look and now, I can! Sort of. I’ve tried this 5-6 times and i’m still unsure of how I feel. It does a good job of creating waves, for about an hour or 2. I have super straight hair that doesn’t like to do anything so I know that’s the problem here. Not the product, but my own hair. I wish I could have a better, more in depth, review but my hair is just not liking this.

Jules and Esther- Cucumber Eye Gel

I loved this eye gel. I was sort of weirded out at first because of the texture but I tried it that first night and fell in love. It’s not greasy at all and it’s moisturizing enough to really hydrate. This was also excellent for my dark circles when applied before bed. Each time I wore this I woke up with no dark circles or puffiness. The best part? It’s super cooling and relaxing. It feels like you’re actually putting cucumbers on your eyes. As much as I liked this product though I was pretty disappointed when a week in my sample got weird. The gel became super gelly and I couldn’t use it anymore. It feels like silly puddy. I’m not sure if bad packaging is to blame or the fact that it’s winter and my house is really dry? Either way, i’m definitely doing some research in the review section to make sure it was just me before buying this full size. I’m really hoping this isn’t normal.

That’s it for this month’s samples! Do you use any of these products? If so, what do you think? And, have you ever tried Birchbox? If not you should totally check it out if you’re interested in testing new products! Check out their link here!

Thanks!

Spring Wishes- OOTD 4

Spring wishesHello Readers!!

Today i’m here with my first Wednesday outfit post! I am absolutely obsessed with this dress. The colors are perfect for spring and summer but it also looks great in the winter time with some black tights. I wanted to show this off today because I really, really need spring to come. The more I look at this dress the more I think that I could possibly wear this outside sometime this year. It has been so frigid lately and there has been so much snow I’m just done with winter. Where I live we might set the record for the coldest February ever. Not a record I want to be breaking. (Side note, we have WAY more snow than this now, i’m trying to plan my posts ahead of time so this picture was taken a little bit ago. shhhhhhh)

 spring wishes 2

The dress is from Forever 21 and so is the cardigan. The dress has a top sheer layer with the floral print while the other layer is purple. I’m really impressed with the quality of this dress. You all know how Forever 21 can be sorta iffy. This was made exceptionally well. The waist is elastic and cinched in but I always add a belt for some extra emphasis on the waistline.

In the winter when i wear this I pair it with a cardigan, normally a white or black one. I also wear tights in the winter for extra warmth. In the summer, this is perfect all by itself. It’s short, but not too short (I honestly would wear gym shorts under this, i’m so awkward about wearing short dresses/skirts). And, the top has a cute flutter cap sleeve detailing that really makes this dress extra flirty. I love the higher neck because it does show off the legs quite a bit, there’s a nice balance. Normally I just wear earrings with this dress but looking at it now it would look really cute with a long silver necklace, if I took off the belt.

Let me know what you think in the comments!

And, just for fun, here’s a blooper shot of me talking to my “photographer” aka my mom and telling her to make sure she took the pictures vertically and horizontally on my phone.

Spring Wishes 3

If you ignore my facial expression you can really see the detailing in the floral print. Oh! And the belt. I have no idea where its from. I think it came on a dress I bought years ago from Forever 21 or H&M. It’s completely elastic with this simple silver clasp on the front. It’s perfect for cinching in the waist without being uncomfortable.

Stay tuned for my “ode to winter” sunggly sweater post next Wednesday!

The Best Chicken Pot Pie Recipe 7

The Best Chicken Pot Pie

Today I’m here with my absolute favorite meal. I love this so much I specifically ask for it every year for my birthday. It’s that good. It’s also pretty easy to make and you can substitute pre-made pie crust (cringe!) to make this even easier if you wanted to. The prep time is a bit long if you make the crust from scratch but I promise you, it’s so worth it.

Here’s everything you’ll need:

Ingredients

This pie crust recipe I’ve had for years, even my grandmother uses it so i’m not 100% sure of its origins. I tried Googling “Perfect Pie Crust” and none of them were exactly the same so maybe it’s an original? Who knows, and i’m super sorry if i’m copying any recipe without citing the source, I tried very hard to find a recipe similar enough to credit.

First up, put the flour, sugar and salt in a bowl and mix.

Step1

Next, add the Crisco. I know it looks like a ton and it’s pretty gross, but just go with it. It’s delicious.

Step2Mix it up until the consistency is very crumbly.

Step3Poifect.

Next you want to whisk all your wet ingredients together. The egg, vinegar and water.

Step4Then, slowly add the mixture into the crumbly dough until all is moistened. I know, I know, people hate that word, but it’s the best word to describe how your dough should be. You probably will not need all of this, I ended up using about 3/4 of the mixture. You want the dough to be wet (happy?) enough to form one ball without fallout but you don’t want it wet enough to stick to your fingers.

Step5Like dis.

Once your dough ball is formed you’ll want to split it in half and roll the dough out to 1/4 inch thickness. Then, you’re going to plop it into the pie pan. You can use whatever size pie pan you want. You could even make a bunch of mini ones in ramekins if you wanted!

Step6Now that the dough is all ready to go you’re going to start filling it on up. First toss in the frozen vegetables. I usually use a big bag of the frozen mixed veggies but I only had a small bag of mixed and a bag of peas so I just mixed those together.

Step7After the frozen veggies are on there go ahead and open both cans of your cream of mushroom soup and spread away. You’ll want an even coat across the whole top of the pie. Don’t worry, it’ll sink down into the veggies as it cooks.

If you’re awesome you can cube and cook your chicken while you make your dough. But, if you’re like me you can wait to cook your chicken after the dough is made. Just throw some olive oil in a pan and cook away. Make sure you cut it up into little cubes first! I don’t have any pictures of this because I didn’t wanna touch my camera with raw chicken juices. Ick.

Step8

b-e-a-utiful.

As you can see, i’m a pro at making the pie crusts neat around the edges. Not. Just make sure you leave enough around the edges so you can crimp your top layer to the bottom layer so nothing seeps out. And, when it doesn’t look appealling, plop an aluminum crust thing-y mabobber on top to protect it/hide the ugly.

Step9

Do you guys have any of these crust shields? If you don’t, you need one. They’re amazing. Basically they keep the thick part of your crusts from burning. Only take it off when you’ve got about 10-15 min left and they’ll be just as golden brown as the top.

So once your pie looks like this you’re going to put it into a 400 degree oven for about an hour. Maybe more depending on your oven. Keep an eye on it and it’ll be perfect.

Step10Enjoy!

This week

 Hello Readers!

I am really not feeling well today (Saturday night as i’m typing this) so i’m going to jump right into the weekly recap! Hope your week was amazing!

Wearing

The warmest clothes I own. It has been FREEZING here in New York this week with temps that are -20. I’ve worn knee high socks under all of my work pants this week and haven’t left the house without gloves, a hat and a scarf. Right now i’m wearing a moisturizing face mask from The Body Shop so I can try to quench my skin from all of this dryness.

Watching

I watched a lot of YouTube this week. I had a lot of videos piling up that I wanted to watch. Does anyone else watch daily vlogs as their guilty pleasure? Fleur De Force has been vlogging every day in February and i’m addicted. I’ve also slowly been watching my beautiful Valentine’s Day gift from my mom disappear. Can’t. Stop. Eating.

 Reading

Still reading Night Road by Kristin Hannah. I’m almost done and I am so happy with this book! I cannot wait to read more from her. She’s a wonderful writer. I go back and forth a lot between reading young adult novels and regular novels, and I have to say, I do like them both equally but… there’s something about reading a novel about adults instead of teenagers that i’m starting to relate to a lot more. Sigh. I’m really starting to realize that i’m an adult now.

Wanting

To stop being dizzy. As I mentioned earlier, I am not feeling so hot. A kid at work today had on cologne that was making me feel incredibly sick. The scent was everywhere and it was making me feel dizzy. I normally don’t have that strong of a reaction to colognes or perfumes but I could not handle this one. Of course the kid couldn’t remember what cologne he put on for the day so here’s hoping he doesn’t keep wearing it. I’ve been dizzy ever since. As soon as i’m done with this i’m passing out for the night.

Needing

I realllllly need to vacuum my room. It’s not dirty or gross or anything, it’s actually covered in fuzzies. I wear fuzzy socks all the time and they keep shedding on the rug because everything static clings to it. That reminds me, I need to buy more static spray and keep it at work for when my pants glue themselves to my legs becacuse of the knee high socks I wear. Guess I “need” to go to Target now :-]

Failed

This week I failed to get my Fancy Friday post up. I have never failed to get a post up when I wanted to and i’m a bit bummed about it. I’m really liking Fancy Friday but I don’t think I’m going to continue it much longer. I don’t want to have more than one fashion post a week, at least not yet. I follow some bloggers that do a Wednesday fashion linkup that I want to join but that would mean stopping Fancy Friday for now. A benefit to doing Wednesday fashion posts is that Wednesday’s are my day off from work so i’m usually a lot more creative with my outfits than I would be on a work day. HELLOOOOO jeans and leggings. Plus, joining a linkup gets me introduced to so many other bloggers. So, stay tuned, you might have a random fashion post this Wednesday that looks a bit like a Fancy Friday (I’ve got a few outfits already photographed).

Accomplished

I was so good at finishing my to do lists this week. I have no idea where my burst of energy came from but I got everything done that I had planned for the week. (Except, my Fancy Friday post but that’s because Paint Nite kept me out a bit later than I expected.) I got a ton of stuff set up for my trip and i’m finalizing what I want to do the first two days i’m in London because my tour doesn’t start until the evening of my 3rd day. Let me know if you have any tips!

Thankful For

Heat. Scarves. Friends. Nice coworkers who start my car. The fact that Spring is happening in London.

(It gives me hope that NY will warm up soon)

Hope ya’ll enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Beer + Paint = Good Times 1

Hello Readers!
So, you may have notice that I didn’t get out a Fancy Friday post yesterday. I was a bad scheduler and didn’t work on it early enough to get it up for yesterday. Whoops! Either way, I might not continue with it, i’m really not sure yet. The reason I wasn’t home until late last night (9:45, I know guys, really not that late) was because I was at Paint Nite!
20150219_190411
Really disappointed with the photo quality on my front facing camera. :-[
Paint Nite is one of those paint as you drink events that seem to be super popular everywhere. There are a bunch of different companies that do this but this one is one of the few closest to me. They are all over the US so check out their website to see if there are any in your area!
The idea is really simple. You pick a painting (or a date or an artist) and sign up for that event. Show up, buy a drink, and paint! It’s that simple! The drinks are not included but all of your paint supplies are! Bonus: a lot of these events are held at a bar and right after normal working hours. Helloooo Happy Hour.
Paint Nite 1
Our instructor, Elizabeth, was fantastic. She was very upbeat and bubbly and she really kept the night fun for everyone. The artist has a completed painting on display for reference and they paint right along with you so you can get some instruction. They’ll tell you what colors to use and which brushes.
Paint Nite 2
We did all of this with the “big daddy” brush.
The mood is light, and fun, and you’re encouraged to be as creative as you want. You don’t have to do exactly what the artist tells you and by the end of the night everyone’s paintings look slightly different. Some choose to use completely different colors than the suggestions.

 Paint Nite 3Paint Nite 6
Mine is on the left and my friend, Jessica’s is on the right. I went with more squiggly grass and she went with more realistic looking grass haha. During the event you get a break in the middle to let your painting dry and kinda wander around to see what everyone else’s looks like or to refill your drink. At the two Paint Nites I’ve done the waitresses or bartenders come around and take orders so you don’t have to get up in the middle of painting, which is fantastic.
Paint Nite 4
This type of thing is perfect for a group of friends or relatives and they even have private events! It’s also great for just 2 people to go and hang out. In fact, most of the people last night were groups of two. Yes, there are even guys there. Last night there were 3, I believe (all with their respective wives/girlfriends) and they all seemed to be having a blast. Even the gentleman next to me had fun even though he would have rather been watching hockey.
Once everyone’s all done you can get group pictures taken and really check out all of the other paintings. If drinking while painting isn’t enough of an enticement, the second best part is that there is absolutely no setup or cleanup! Your wonderful artist sets everything up before you arrive. Easel, canvas, paint, brushes, water cup, paper towels. It’s all done for you. And when you’re done painting, you just leave everything and it all gets cleaned up after you’re gone. Sorry if we made a mess Elizabeth!
Did I mention the sweet smocks (aprons?) you get to wear?
Paint Nite 5
Please excuse the work pants tucked into the boots. It’s currently -20something outside.
Have you ever done a Paint Nite or a Pant n’ Sip? Let me know what you thought!
Thanks!
